Clico (Sheffield) Tooling Ltd. is the home of the world-renowned Clifton planes. From their small Sheffield based factory, Clico have been producing these high quality traditional style planes for many years. Clico's beginnings (some of their main products also include special aerospace tooling) was at Record Marples Tools, before making its way into the hands of Mr. A. Reid. It is now cared for in the same ways that all independent tool companies are, and they consider the needs of their customer's paramount to their progression. After working for many years in the tooling industry, Mr. Reid was appointed as The Master Cutler on behalf of The Company of Cutler's in Sheffield from Oct 2006 - Oct 2007. This is a privileged honoured to those who wish to serve and protect the rights of the use of the Sheffield name on products. This tradition has been acted upon since 1624 and attempted ways of regulating the cutlery industry that traditionally once boomed in Sheffield. Today, The Company of Cutlers provides a focus for the promotion and support of local manufacturing industries and businesses. At "The World of Woodworking" we are pleased to be supporting and also to be supported by the ideals of Clico (Sheffield) Tooling Ltd.

Clifton Bench Plane no. 3

Some of Clico's more recognised products, the Clifton Bench Planes are both highly attractive and functional tool that aim to give you an accurate and smooth finish. Ideal for the cabinet maker and discerning woodworker, both amateur and professional. These planes are ready to use from the box and do not need hours of flattening and fettling to make them fit for use (though we appreciate many woodworkers will prefer to hone the cutting iron themselves.)

The Clifton Bench Planes are made from the finest materials: the body and frog are made from accurately machined grey cast iron with their sides and sole fully ground. The Knob and handle are carefully shaped, sanded and sealed from Bubinga hardwood. The Cutting Iron is hand forged from high carbon steel, hardened and tempered to 60-62 Rockwell C the precision ground and are 0.120" thick (3mm). The Cap Iron has a two piece design to offer rigid clamping. The Frog locating pins and screws are made from ground stainless steel and are polished. The Lever Cap are made from grey iron casting polished. Both the Screws and Adjusting Wheel are made from polished brass. The Y Lever is a solid one piece casting. The Adjusting Lever and some other components are made from polished stainless steel.

The frog and frog seating in the body of these planes are based on the BEDROCK design, first seen on early Stanley planes, meaning the seating pad in the bode is full face, fully machine to mate with an equivalent full face, fully machined underside of the Frog. This ensures absolute stability of the Frog, providing a firm and solid surface for the cutting iron, this again rests on a fully machined upper side of the Frog. When allied to the extra thick Clifton cutting iron and Clifton two piece cap iron. This design has probably the most rigid and effective clamping mechanism of any Bench plane available.

The accuracy of this mechanism allows for the cutting iron to be advanced to give a virtually "zero" mouth opening, so allowing the finest shavings to be taken even on the most difficult of timbers. The BEDROCK design uniquely allows the mouth width to be adjusted without dismantling the Frog and iron assembly. To adjust the mouth width, the Frog should be moved backwards or forwards as required. To do this, loosen the outside two of the three screws located at the back of the Frog seating pad (underneath the adjusting wheel), then turn the central screw clockwise to close the mouth and anti-clockwise to open the mouth.

Clifton Plane No. 3 has a cutter width of 1 .3/4" (44mm) and is used for smoothing.

Clifton 430 Two Piece Cap Iron

The Clifton Two Piece Cap Iron is an entirely effective way of improving the performance of standard bench planes. The two piece Cap Iron reduces the cutting iron "chatter". In essence the hinged joint and the extra thickness means that the cutting iron is rigidly clamped to the frog and fully supported along with its width, close to the mouth.

Additional features that eliminate irritating characteristics of the one-piece Iron Cap are:
- the snug fit of the accurately machined edge of the lower part of the two-piece Cap Iron prevents shavings being forced between the cutting iron and cap iron, so reducing the choking of the mouth.
- The two-piece cap iron facilitates honing of the cutting iron, as the lower part can be easily removed without having to lose the original cap iron setting. (For this reason, this feature is referred to "Stay Set").

The Two-Piece Cap Iron will fit metal bench planes made by Stanley, Record, Footprint Tools etc.

Clifton 450 Multi-Plane

The daddy of all planes! The Clifton Multi-Plane is a worthy successor in all respects to previous makes of this unique and versatile tool. Made especially for those who enjoy the sheer craftsmanship of working with hand tools.
The body is machined from quality grey iron castings, nickel chrome plated. The handle, knob and fence are made from Rosewood. The plane is supplied with a set of 24 cutters made from the finest Sheffield Tool Steel, accurately ground, hardened and tempered to 61-62 Rockwell "C" Hardness. The cutting edge is ground to 35 deg. These are then packed in a wallet.

The Multi-Plane comes complete with all accessories packed (a total of 24 cutters) in a traditional wooden box, together with a full instruction leaflet. Size: 300mm x 150mm x 150mm. Weight: 4kg (700g).

Spare Blades for Multi-Plane also available - these will fit most brands of combination plane but to be on the safe side, we advise you give specifications (e.g. brand and pattern number) of your plane on an email/by telephone to ensure we can get you the correct size.

Clifton 400 Shoulder Rebate Plane

A new delicate plane brought to you by Clifton. The 400 Shoulder Rebate Plane has a fine mouth for cabinetmakers and those more demanding woodworkers wanting fine shavings in their precision work. The body is machined from quality grey iron casting, accurately machined and precision ground on the sole and the sides. The cutting iron seats smoothly onto machined pads and fits snugly into the body of the plane and held in by a Rosewood wedge. Adjustment of the cutting iron is done in the traditional manner by tapping the end of the cutting iron and locking the Rosewood wedge in place. The finish is Bright Ground.

Clifton 410 Shoulder Rebate Plane

The Clifton 410 Shoulder Rebate Plane fills the need for a narrow light and accurate shoulder plane. The body is machined from quality grey iron casting and precision ground on the sole and the sides. The lever arm is made of unbreakable malleable iron and fits snugly into the body of the plane. The cutting iron fits smoothly onto the machined pads in the body and can be finely adjusted by means of a screw. The finish is Bright Ground.

Clifton 3110 Plane

The Clifton 3110 Plane is an extremely versatile tool combining the features of shoulder rebate, chisel plane and adjustable mouth bull-nose plane. As a shoulder plane, the front extension piece is fitted as a chisel plane all nose pieces are removed; and as a bull-nose plane, the thinner nose piece is fitted in conjunction with one or both of the precision machined steel shims (1/32" and 1/64") - or for very fine work, without either shim.

The body is machined from a quality grey iron casting and precision ground on the sole and sides. The lever arm is also of grey iron. The cutting iron fits smoothly onto the machined pads in the body and can be adjusted by means of the screw. Bright Ground finish.

Clifton Spokeshaves

Clifton Spokeshaves are made from virtually unbreakable spheridal graphite/malleable iron; the surfaces are finished and polished to give maximum comfort in the hand; the weight and balance permits the Spokeshave to sit firmly on the wood so that only a stroking action is required to make them cut. The firm seating and fine adjustment allow the woodworker to make delicate nuances in the weight of cut.
Available in either a Concave (550) or Convex (500) version. Spare cutters are also available.

The Concave Spokeshave may be used instead of a draw knife to chamfer square timber, but is more often used as a delicate tool by furniture makers to shape on curves e.g. carbriole legs or for blending in cuved surfaces made by machine - such as posts and stair rails.
The Convex Spokeshave is the counterpart to the concave model and is essential for recessed work.

Both Spokeshaves have a length of 10", a weight of 15oz and a curve of 2.1/2" dia.

Clico Hollow Square Mortice Chisel Sharpening Tools

These countersinks can be bought with fixed pilots which fit exactly the bore in the chisel. Each separate chisel must have a countersink with a pilot to suit each size. Alternatively a sharpening set is available with interchangeable pilots, held in place with a socket screw locked with an Allen key. The use of this tool ensures that all four cutting edges will be evenly sharpened and maintained in the correct shape and bevel. Place the chisel carefully in a vice, fit the tool into a brace. Several turns on the tool will produce a fine cutting edge. The inside corners of the chisel must be finished with a fine file.

Available as either the Interchangable Pilot Type 539 Series Cutters made in High Speed Steel or as Solid Type High Speed Steel 538 Series.

Series 539 sets include:

The Clico 570 Tube Plug Cutter is a keen, easy cutting tool, suitable for use on almost all kinds of wood. It is used in the manufacture of furniture and in all work where plugs are used for the purpose of plugging holes and where screws are counterbored. The Clico 543 Forstner Pattern Bit, unlike other bits is guided by its circular rim and not by the centre point. It will bore any arc of a circle, and its direction is unaffected by knots or the run of the grain. The holes bored are clean, true and flat-bottomed. Overlapping holes can be bored without difficulty. These characteristics make the Forstner Pattern Bit unequalled for Core Boxes, fine and delicate patterns, fancy scrollwork, veneers, screen work, scalloping and all kinds of pattern making.

Clico's saw tooth cutter is suitable for boring holes at an angle, overlapping or at close centres. It bores smooth, clean holes in all types of wood, with or across the grain, while its light but strong construction ensures easy boring with minimum power consumption. It will not choke and it easily sharpened. Also ideal for use in a lathe for woodboring.
