Robert Sorby - Woodturning & Carving etc.

World of Woodworking |  Robert Sorby - Woodturning & Carving etc.

Robert Sorby is the world's premier manufacturer of specialist woodworking tools. The company heritage dates back well over two hundred years and the original Sorby family was one of the leading producers of cutlery and edge tools in Sheffield. In 1624, Robert Sorsbie (a variation on today's pronunciation), was appointed the very first Mastler Cutler by the Company of Cutlers. This company was formed as a way of regulating the standards in the cutlery industry. This group is still in operation today and still serves to protect the rights of the Sheffield name used in manufacturing. The Sorby family led a long and varied history in the cutlery and tooling industry. From their early beginnings in tooling, the company Robert Sorby has developed a specific expertise in edge tool manufacture, which has been passed through the generations to produce today's classic collection of Robert Sorby tools. It is believed that Robert Sorby is one of the oldest hand tool manufacturers in the city and indeed certainly one of the oldest still producing today.

Their production range now focuses much of its business on woodturning and woodcarving. These are certainly tools for those who appreciate top-notch tools.

Robert Sorby are proud to promote that all their tools are fine Sheffield produce, made with the highest quality materials. We are also proud to be promoting these items at The World of Woodworking.

Robert Sorby Bowl Gouges

Robert Sorby Bowl Gouges

The Robert Sorby Bowl Gouges are a must have for all bowl turners. Milled from round bar, giving both mass and stability, these tools are ideal for making bowls. They can produce massive profiling cuts or delicate finishing cuts as necessary. Made from M2 Sheffield High Speed Steel with an Ash Handle that gives comfort, balance and control. The tang is deeply seated in the handle for added safety.

Available as Standard, Fingernail or High Performance.

The Fingernail Bowl Gouges have a fingernail grind. Their increased flexibility allows for 'pull' cuts - avoiding catching the lathe bed. The greater cutting tip area can be used for heavy profiling cuts and fine, delicate shearing cuts.

The High Performance Bowl Gouge is coated with Titanium Nitrade to give it increased performance and resistance to edge wear. The cutting edge on these tools will outlast other Robert Sorby tools by a minimum of three fold, meaning less time is spent sharpening.

All come with 14" Handle and have an overall length of 23" except the Standard 842XLH 1/2" and 3/4" which both have a 17" Handle and overall length of 26" and 26.3/4" respectively.

Robert Sorby Spindle Gouges are intended for use in detailing and are used on between-centre work, where the grain is running parallel to the lathe bed. Spindle Gouges are used to create coves, beads and other profiles on goblets, vases and egg cups etc. Made from M2 Sheffield High Speed Steel with an Ash Handle that gives comfort, balance and control. The tang is deeply seated in the handle for added safety.

The Spindle Gouges are available in Standard, Fingernail, High Performance, Long & Strong and Continental versions.

Fingernail Spindle Gouges are ideal for fine detailing on spindle work. Having the wing tips ground back reduces the danger of them catching when working in confined areas.

High Performance Spindle Gouges are coated in Titanium Nitrade to increase performance and resistance to edge wear. Sharpens like any other HSS tool.

The Long & Strong Spindle Gouge have the same strength blade as the standard, only longer. The increased length allows a further reach into the workpiece.

The Continental Style originates from European styles and have gained a reputation for their superb handling qualities on spindle work. Being a forged construction, they have an even wall thickness, thereby increasing finesse without compromising strength.

These are not designed for use on bowl grain projects. Made from M2 Sheffield High Speed Steel with a comfortable, Ash handle aimed to give balance and control. The deeply seated tang provides extra safety. Also has a finely polished flute to ensure optimum cutting edge. Overall length: 19"

Also available in the High Performance range, where the cutting edge is enhanced by its Titanium Nitrade coating. High Performance overall length: 21"

Robert Sorby Shear Scrapers

Robert Sorby Shear Scrapers

Quantity:

Please select required tool:

The Robert Sorby Shear Scrapers are available as both an external scraper and an internal scraper. Shear Scraping is a recently enhanced method of woodturning which relies on the presentation of the scraper at a shear angle. This technique offers some significant advantages over conventional scrapers.

- At the optimum angle of 45 degrees, the slicing action is safer and produces a superior finish.
- Sanding is often unnecessary.
- The risk of the cutter digging in is virtually eliminated.

The 3/8" square shank sits firmly on the toolrest and presents the cutter at 45 degrees to the workpiece when used in either direction. This is due to the unique cutter seating position. Each tip can be repositioned several times before resharpening becomes necessary. Spare HSS cutters (826C & 827C) are available and are fully interchangeable.

Made from Sheffield M2 High Speed Steel with a comfortable Ash handle that provides balance and control.

Available Handled with HSS cutter or Unhandled.

The New Robert Sorby Captive Ring Tool has a user friendly flat shaft with a specifically designed cutter seat. This seat is machined into both sides of the shaft so that when cutting either side of the captive ring, the cutter is angled in front and into the direction of the cut, giving more control over the cut whilst still keeping the tool flat on the rest. The cutters can be swivelled in the seat allowing the ring to be cut within a limited space. The Captive Ring Tool cutters are interchangeable with the Mushroom Tool (804H) and the Box Hollower (803H). You can sharpen the cutters with a diamond file or honing stone flat across the face. A user instruction guide is included.

Robert Sorby Texturing Tool

Robert Sorby Texturing Tool

Quantity:

Please select required tool:

The Robert Sorby Texturing Tool enhances turned pieces by producing a myriad of different textures. It can be used to create unique effects that alter the tactile and visual qualities of your bowls, hollow forms, goblets or boxes perfect for adding that individual mark to your work. Orange peel, striated and ribbed patterns are possible using this tool. Some of these effects are subtle, some are coarse and some are aggressive depending on the angle of the cutter as it makes contact with your work and the amount of pressure applied. The effects vary considerably depending on the type of wood used, whether it is a bowl, spindle or end grain work and the angle at which the tool is presented. Further variations are possible with the application of dyes, liming waxes and flame scorching, all of which create interesting contrasts. A useful tip: choose the pattern you want and texture a defined area, this may be the rim or a band around the bowl. The interplay between the textured and non textured areas can be stunning!

Available as just the cutter or as complete tool with handle.

Robert Sorby Spiralling & Texturing System

Quantity:

Please select required tool/component:

The Robert Sorby Spiralling and Texturing System offers the finest way to add decorations such as spirals to turned pieces, once dominated by only priviledged turners. The Robert Sorby Spiralling System is a further development on the texturing tool and is used to create both left and right handed spirals with ease. It features an innovative rest with indexed reference positionsm which enable the replication of the spirals. Differing pitch and twist profiles are made possible by altering the presentation angle of the cutter or by changing the cutter to a different one.

The Texturing Tool is part of the system and includes a graduated rest and 2mm, 4mm and 6mm Spiralling Cutters. Items also available individually.

With these you can create spiral goblets, candle holders, boxes, vases, bowls and spillikins. There are also 5mm and 11mm cutters available as optional extras.

A useful tip: sharpening the cutters is easy - simply rub a diamond file flat on each of the bevels. This will keep the cutter in top condition!

Robert Sorby Spindlemaster

Robert Sorby Spindlemaster

Please select required size:

The unique Robert Sorby Spindlemaster is the answer to those who suffer anxiety pangs when faced with the prospect of using a skew chisel. It is easy to master, safe to use, and simple to sharpen... and because it has no corners there is little danger of a dig-in even in the least experienced hands.

It produces all the basic cuts associated with both the skew chisel and spindle gouge: it beads, it coves, it turns square to round and trims end-grain. It is just as effective on sculputural projects like lamp stands and stair spindles as it is on fine finials on box lids and Christmas ornaments.

The Spindlemaster is especially effective on the crudest and softest woods like pine. Its enhanced tip, shear cutting action and highly polished bevel combine to produce a very fine finish on all types of wood - finer than 400 grit paper! And it just sails through knows and other imperfections as if there were not there at all!

Sharpening is straightforward. Simply hone across the flat top face to keep it in tip-top condition. As a result of its contact with the workpiece the bevel is effectively self polishing and should need no further attention.

The Spindlemaster comes complete with a set of illustrated instructions.

A micro version (875H) is now available - this is ideal for pen turning!

Robert Sorby RS200KT Multi-Tip Hollowing Tool

Robert Sorby RS200KT Multi-Tip Hollowing Tool

Quantity:

Please select required tool:

The Robert Sorby Multi-Tip Hollowing Tool has been described as one of the most versatile tools around. A must have in every turners tool kit. The exclusive Robert Sorby Multi-Tip Tool (RS200KT) features a massive half-round shank and interchangeable tips which combine to offer the turne a variety of different opportunities:

For Hollowing:
There are two HSS hollowing tips which can be used along with the swivel assembly. The first (RS212C) which incorporates an angle of just under 90 degrees is ideal for the initial rapid opening up of an aperture and for creating a crisp corner in the base of boxes. The second tip (RS211C) is more suitable for producing a sweeping curve in the bottom of vases or other hollow forms. The opposite end of each tip has been left deliberately blank for the turner to shape as he pleases. By offsetting the cutter, this tool then enables the turner to under-cut under rims of bowls. Unlike other hollowing systems, it is used with the flat section on the tool rest. This eliminates all the rocking and rolling normally associated with hollowing and puts the turner firmly in control.

Available in two sizes, this is one of the most effective, economical hollowing systems around.

For Scraping:
By fitting the HSS tear drop shaped cutter (RS200C), this tool suddenly becomes a multi-faceted scraper. The shape of the scraper cutter converts the tool into a round, half-round or square scraper suitable for use on the inside and outside of bowls, platters and hollow forms.

With the flat surface of the shank on the tool rest, scraping is in conventional mode. By turning the tool round, with the half-round section of the shank at 45 degrees on the tool rest, it becomes a highly efficient shear scraper giving fine shavings and a highly polished finish.

For Beading and Coving:
As optional extras, there are four additional cutters available -
1/4" & 1/2" beads (RS239C)
3/8" & 5/8" beads (RS236C)
1/4" & 1/2" coves (RS238C)
3/8" & 5/8" coves (RS235C)

The respective beads and coves match exactly. Using these cutters permits the addition of further decorations or the production of wheels, bangles and rings. All tips and cutters are sharpened with the aid of a diamond stone or file. Replacements are readily available.

Robert Sorby Swan Neck Hollowing Tool

Robert Sorby Swan Neck Hollowing Tool

Quantity:

Please select required tool:

The Robert Sorby Swan Neck Hollowing Tools are designed for end grain work, hollowing small and miniature work using branch wood or end grain timber. (The items pictured are as follows: (from left to right) 851H, 854 wall thicknessing gauge attached to 851H, 852H with 853, Depth stop attached to the blade, and 850H)

The smallest (850H) is designed to work through the narrowest of apertures, down to as small as 3/8" (10mm). The noring bar and depth stop (852H and 853) form an ideal method of quickly opening up a vessel to provide both entry opening and final hollowing depth. Where space permits the larger tool (851H) provides a heavier section and has the benefit of a replaceable swivel cutting tip. This can be used in conjunction with the wall thickness gauge (854) to create consistent side wall thickness.

The individual shape of these tools makes them suitable for blind turning or under cutting where reach is restricted. The 14" version (851H) is designed for end grain use on shallower depth projects whilst the slightly larger model (855H) allows for greater reach.

The 24" version (859H) is produced from a more substantial section steel, and is more suitable for both end grain and side grain working. These tools are used with the round bar directly behind the swan neck (curved area) against the tool rest.

Both 851H and 855H can be used in conjunction with wall thicknessing gauges.

Available in a set of 3 - includes 850H, 851H and 852H.

Dimensions:

850H - length = 14", Min. aperture = 3/8". Max project = 3"
851H - length = 14", Min. Aperture = 1/2". Max project = 5"

Robert Sorby RS2000 Deep Hollowing System

Robert Sorby RS2000 Deep Hollowing System

Quantity:

Please select required tool:

The Robert Sorby RS2000 Deep Hollowing System is a tried and tested method of deep vessel hollowing. It is an economically priced adaptation of an original 1980's concept of American master turner, Dennis Stuart, from whom it is made under licence. This flexible system can be used in a number of modes. Firstly it is a very safe and effective means of hollowing deep vessels through narrow openings. At the same time it can be used for coning - producing a series of bowls from the same blank with a minimum of waste wood. This same method enables picture frames and other large rings to be made. Included in the system is a chattertool assembly which enhances end grain by creating a myriad of different decorative effects. The RS2000 is available as a complete system with 20 components in a beauful wooden presentation case or as a basic system (RS2001) which is identical to the complete system except for the elimination of the chattertool components. Alternatively, components may be purchased individually to suit your requirements.

The RS2000 is supplied with a comprehensive 12 page instructional manual with useful guidance and illustrations.

Articulated Probe:

With its moveable head the Articulated Probe (RS213) reaches many inaccessible spots. It can be fitted with either a large scraper (RS213) or the hollowing tips (RS211C & RS212C). The flat working surface gives it more stability than conventional hollowing tools. It should be fitted to the Main Handle (RS202) and Side Handle (RS203) or the Armbrace (RS206).

Slicer:
The hollow ground nose of the tungsten carbide tip allows deep plunge cuts, at any angle, to remove cones from bowls and vessels. The Slicer (RS205) can also be used as a heavy duty parting tool. It should be mounted in the Main Handle with the Side Handle assembled at a convenient position on the Slider Blade. It is recommended that the Side Handle be placed in the vertical position to counteract downward forces.

Hooker:
The Hooker (RS210) is designed as a safe method of hollowing vessels through narrow openings. It comes fitted with a scraper cutter (RS222) for finishing but also takes a swivel assembly and hollowing tips (RS211C & RS212C). Its design allows for both inboard and outboard turning. It should be fitted to the Main Handle (RS202) and Side Handle (RS203) or alternatively the Armbrace (RS206).

Armbrace:
The Armbrace (RS206) was conceived to enhance control and comfort when using either the Hooker, Articulated Probe, or Slicer. It enables the turner to reach further over the tool rest than is normally the case when losing control in the face of rotational forces. The addition of a neoprene grip serves to dampen vibration.

The many thousands of different carving tool shapes and sweeps are a mine field for the beginner but Robert Sorby have simplified this choice by only offering 24 of the most universally used chisels. The chisels are made from Special Sheffield alloy steel unique to Robert Sorby for edge tool manufacture. They have excellent balance because of their thinner blade sections. Robert Sorby carving tools undergo a stringent heat treatment process to ensure the finest edge retention and are polished to a razor sharp edge so they are ready for use.

Available in Square Chisels, Skew Chisel, Straight Gouges, Veiners, Bent Gouges, Spoon Bit Gouges, and V Tools. All in a variety of sizes.
