The Pax brand was founded in 1776 by Thomas Sanderson, part of Sanderson Brothers & Co. Ltd. This company has a lengthy part of Sheffield history being one of the leaders in steel production and it’s by products - one of which was the Pax range of saws. The introduction of such fine saws is something we are pleased to continue today and if you are looking for a top quality saw, this is the range that will provide you with just that.

Pax saws are made to original specifications with taper ground, skew back breasted Handsaws and Tenon Saws with heavy, folded brass backs to provide the perfect tension to the blade. The Pax 1776 saw celebrates the ways that Sanderson Brothers would have originally crafted saws. This saw is considered somewhat by many of its users as a "masterpiece": a definite purchase for those who appreciate only the finest.
These saws are currently made to order, please be aware there may be a short delay despatching these during busy periods.

The Pax 1776 Saw, Thomas Flinn’s finest saw and a must have for all woodworking enthusiasts. This is our flagship saw - NOW WITH AN ADDED DIFFERENCE! Made with a heavily folded brass back roll marked with "Pax 1776 Sheffield England", it is made as a celebration piece commemorating the start of Pax saws and are made today to the same high standards they were two hundred years ago. The folded brass back means the blade is held under tension offering excellent rigidity and balance. The weight of the brass back aids the fine cutting ability of this saw. The traditional open handle is made from English Elm and is hand finished with Danish Oil to offer the perfect comfort and grip. This saw is the ultimate in beauty and also in it’s unrivalled performance. These saws are all tested before despatch.

This is now available as a variable pitch version (10") with the teeth on the blade starting at 20tpi and gradually getting larger up to around 10tpi at the end of the blade. This type of saw allows easy starting of cuts and faster cuts due to the coarser teeth towards the end of the blade.

Available in both rip and crosscut versions

As seen on Group Test in British Woodworking magazine (December 2011 - issue no. 27). - Winning 2nd place on the dovetail tests performed by Peter Sefton and his students. (1st place went to the PAX 1776 Dovetail Saw 20tpi!)

Pax Handsaws

PAX handsaws are one of the finest handsaws available today. Using the history and tradition of PAX, these saws are still made to original specifications. Handcrafted from the finest alloy steel these saws are taper ground and breasted (meaning less teeth are in contact with the wood and therefore less friction) and are precisely set and sharpened by hand to ensure the best possible cut without binding. The handle is made from the finest steamed beech with a two-tone gloss finish.

Packed in individual presentation style card box.

With a variation of teeth sizes per inch, there is a Handsaw for every type of work and will give you a different type of cut/finish depending on what you require.

* Our standard Rip saws have 4 ½ tpi are intended for cutting down the grain.
* A Standard Handsaw has 8tpi and is a crosscut saw for cutting across the grain. This is a good general purpose tooth size.
* The Panel Saw has 10tpi and is a finer toothed crosscut saws. It is for cutting across the grain and gives a finer finish than larger toothed handsaws.

The Pax Veneer Saw is made to enable cuts to be started in the centre of a panel of wood and for other inlaying work. The saw has 15tpi and the two different sides of the blade are made so that one side has a crosscut tooth formation and the other side has a rip tooth formation.
