NEW!!Green Woodworking Tools

World of Woodworking | NEW!!Green Woodworking Tools

The majority of the Green Woodworking tools in this section are Ray Iles items but I've also added some other products which I think may be of interest and can be found in other sections on our site. Robert Sorby also offers a great range of chisels that may be of great use in your green woodworking projects. These can be found in the Robert Sorby Chisel section on our site.

Ray Iles Engineering (a relative of Ashley Iles, the turning tool and chisel maker) has a range of high quality green woodworking tools and something I thought would make a great addition to our woodworking tool ranges on The World of Woodworking. Although these are not Sheffield made technically, these are made in Lincolnshire in the UK so not too far away....

Ray Iles has a great range of froes for helping with your green woodworking. Used to split logs, shingles, shakes etc the froe has a cutting edge on the blade that when hit with a mallet, splits the wood. The froe is then twisted slightly to split the rest of the wood down the log making a quick and effective way to split your wood.

This large froe has a blade length of 10 1/2" and is made from EN9 spring steel. It has a handle length of 14". The handle is made from beech and is finished with an oil coating. The tapered eye allows for easy removal of the handle.

Item is made in Lincolnshire.

New! Ray Iles "Mike Abbott" Drawknife

Price: £37.50
(Excluding VAT at 20%)

Quantity:

A traditional green woodworking tool, the drawknife is used for the removal of bark or for more fine finishing also. Used by bodgers, chair makers, furniture makers etc. This Ray Iles version has been designed by Mike Abbott to help adapt this traditional tool slightly. The difference being that the splayed handles are also bent slightly downwards so that you are working with your hands at approximately the same angle as your work piece, whichever way you are using the drawknife - back down or cannel down.

This is made from 01 high carbon tool steel and has turned beech handles with brass ferrules. Blade length: 8"

Clifton Spokeshaves

Clifton Spokeshaves are made from virtually unbreakable spheridal graphite/malleable iron; the surfaces are finished and polished to give maximum comfort in the hand; the weight and balance permits the Spokeshave to sit firmly on the wood so that only a stroking action is required to make them cut. The firm seating and fine adjustment allow the woodworker to make delicate nuances in the weight of cut.

Available in either a Concave (550) or Convex (500) version. Spare cutters are also available.

The Concave Spokeshave may be used instead of a draw knife to chamfer square timber, but is more often used as a delicate tool by furniture makers to shape on curves e.g. carbriole legs or for blending in cuved surfaces made by machine - such as posts and stair rails.
The Convex Spokeshave is the counterpart to the concave model and is essential for recessed work.

Both Spokeshaves have a length of 10", a weight of 15oz and a curve of 2.1/2" dia.

3 foot One Man Crosscut Saw

3 foot One Man Crosscut Saw

Price: £60.61

One of our most popular mail order requests, our One and Two Man Cross Cut Saws have proved to be a much sought after product. These large saws are used mostly in forestry work and the crosscutting of large logs. But in recent years, these have been bought by people aiming to cut their own fire wood etc. They are a great alternative to chain saws in both a safety and environmental way and can be used by anyone! Get the family to help!

The 3 foot One Man Cross Cut Saw has a clear finished beech handle and comes complete with an auxiliary handle which can be attached to the front of the blade so you can get some additional assistance with cutting if necessary. The handle can also be fitted to the top of the blade to help you push the blade if using alone. The teeth are a Great American style tooth which uses gullets to enable the waste wood to be cleared whilst cutting.

These saws have also been featured in the Discovery Channel's "How It's Made" programme - this is to be aired in the UK on 23rd September 2010 @ 8.30pm but will be viewable on re-runs.

Maintenance: The large file (as seen on this page and on the sharpening page) is used for sharpening these items. Saw setters are too small for saws with teeth of this size.

Sizing advice: we recommend a saw length that is double the size of wood you are wanting to cut. This is to ensure that you can get enough stroke in your cutting.

Due to the length of these there may be a surcharge added to carriage if sending outside the UK and to the Scottish Highlands. Please contact me for more information if you are planning on ordering and shipping overseas.

The teeth on the Two Man Cross Cut Saws work in a way that the teeth cut on the pull stroke on each side of the tooth and so actually cut in each pulling direction. The Two Man Cross Cut Saws come with two wooden handles. Available in a range of sizes to suit your needs from 4ft-8ft (click drop down box to see sizes and prices).
