Saws - The Pax Range

The Pax brand was founded in 1776 by Thomas Sanderson, part of Sanderson Brothers & Co. Ltd. This company has a lengthy part of Sheffield history being one of the leaders in steel production and it’s by products - one of which was the Pax range of saws. The introduction of such fine saws is something we are pleased to continue today and if you are looking for a top quality saw, this is the range that will provide you with just that.

Pax saws are made to original specifications with taper ground, skew back breasted Handsaws and Tenon Saws with heavy, folded brass backs to provide the perfect tension to the blade. The Pax 1776 saw celebrates the ways that Sanderson Brothers would have originally crafted saws. This saw is considered somewhat by many of its users as a "masterpiece": a definite purchase for those who appreciate only the finest.
These saws are currently made to order, please be aware there may be a short delay despatching these during busy periods.

Saws - The Lynx Range

The Lynx range is another highly regarded brand of saws. These have been made in Sheffield since 1858 by E. Garlick & Son. Although less in known to us about the history of this company, we know it has been working quietly in Sheffield since this time until Thomas Flinn & Co. accumulated The Garlick Saw Company in 1999. It has been growing in popularity ever since and these products are now shipped worldwide. We have continued making these saws with the traditional features they had in their early years.

There are some variables on the Lynx products that give them their identity, such as the American Walnut handles that are available on the Handsaw, Tenon saw and Dovetail Saws. This wood gives these saws a more prestigious touch and makes them some of the finest saws available.

The Lynx range also offers some more reasonably priced saws without losing quality and the Made in Sheffield stamp. This is something we are proud to be promoting on all of our products and means we can offer something for all our woodworkers or merely people who recognise that quality will outlast that of a cheaper alternative.
These saws are currently made to order, please be aware there may be a short delay despatching these during busy periods.

Saws - E.T. Roberts & Lee

We are pleased to announce that we have recently acquired E. T. Roberts & Lee Saws, another UK based saw manufacturers. We aim to keep many of the existing lines and add them to our range.

Roberts & Lee ranges include the Dorchester brand and Parktone Brands which are the more popular of the original Roberts & Lee ranges. The company was founded in 1908 and was sold to another company before we purchased this company in June 2008.

All items are made to order and at times there may be a slight delay in getting these items out during busy periods or if we have to wait for production batches to be prepared.

Saws - Specialised Products inc. Two Man Crosscut Saws

Thomas Flinn offers a range of specialised products for a variety of applications. Many of these products have been made here for many years and have become some of our more obscure items of manufacture. As these items are made to order, please be aware there may be a delay despatching these during busy periods.

Saws - The William Greaves Range

William Greaves were once a prolific company who highly prospered in the 19th century during the boom of the tool and cutlery trades and as steel became more commercially available. William Greaves situated at Sheaf Works in the heart of Sheffield, opened in 1823 and was known to be the largest business in this area at this time. The Sheaf Works made a range of tools and saws including cutlery, penknives and razors and also even made its own steel in house. The factory used it’s perfect position for waterpower being built on the edge of the Sheffield canal and also used the railway line in close proximity giving them the perfect opportunities for it’s famed success.

We have been making the William Greaves range since 1991, to these same specifications as their early days. These traditional style saws are ideal for the keen D.I.Yer and woodworkers who want quality on a budget.
These are made to order, please be aware there may be a delay despatching these during busy periods.

Saws - Accessories, After care and sharpening

Saw Sharpening guide currently being constructed.... please check back soon to see how to care for your saws...but for the time being, I have selected a couple of products that you may find useful.

Atkinson Walker Circular Saws - Industrial and Pro Trade DIY blades

Atkinson Walker Ltd is one of the leading UK manufacturers of circular saw blades. They have been manufacturing circular saws since 1923 and to this day are still a family owned organisation. From their traditional origins, this company has evolved to suit modern day manufacturing and they are able to provide a wide range of high quality blades for your use. High quality is paramount in the purchase of industrial circular saw blades.

The processes involved in manufacturing high quality circular saw blades is reflected in their price and these saws have a wealth of knowledge and craftsmanship that enable these saws to last and be re-sharpened around 10-20 times.
I was lucky enough to take a tour of this factory to see exactly the stages involved in making these saw blades. Originally each saw blade used to be cut from sheets of steel using press tools which at times does still happen, but with modern technology in the form of CADCAM, these can also be laser cut to a wide configuration and specification. It also allows an easy way to get the perfect saw blade cut with incredible accuracy. Each blade is then hardened in temperatures around 820°c, followed by a cooling process. Keeping the blades flat is very important in the cooling process, pressure is applied to ensure this happens. ( A flat blade is essential with circular saws as I learnt from watching the smithing process involved.) Following the cooling process, the blades are then tempered again in high temperatures which puts the strength back into the blade (blades end up around 44 rockwell).
As mentioned, the smithing process is a key part of the production process in high quality circular saws and the blades are put through this process three times before they are packed (once after heat treatment, once after surface grinding and once at final inspection). The smithing process ensures the blades are completely flat and puts the correct tension in them. A blade that is not accurately flat or does not have enough tension in will not run true. The Atkinson Walker blades are all also surface ground to ensure they are flat and are also sharpened using machines that will sharpen both sides of the teeth and also the top and bottom of the teeth. Many of the saws also have high quality tungsten carbide tips added. Another plus point to the Atkinson Walker blades is the use of expansion slots - when the blade spins, heat makes them expand towards the edge of the blade. The expansion slots accommodate for this expansion.

There is a wide range of applications for these saws. Details that are important when purchasing your circular saw blade :

Diameter of blade x Number of teeth per inch (TPI - for what application?) x Body thickness/Kerf thickness x Centre hole size.

You will note, the products are listed showing only the diameter of the blade x the teeth per inch x body width/kerf width. The centre hole size you require should be submitted using the prompt question box (or email this if necessary). The centre hole size is adjusted to your requirement which means you get the correct fitting for your machine.

Cabinet Scrapers

Cabinet Scrapers are the ideal product for finishing and scraping areas where fine shaving of the wood is necessary. Our extremely popular scraper range has now been expanded with the new addition of our Convex and Concave Scraping Sets.

All scrapers can be re-sharpened using a Burnishing Tool.

Joseph Marples has been manufacturing in Sheffield since at least the 1840's where there were many other Marples' who were involved in manufacturing here. Some of the other Marples, most of whom were related were manufacturing joiners hand tools, such as brass inlaid rosewood & ebony braces, boxwood spokeshaves, beech planes, gauges and squares.

The current Joseph Marples tool company, still manufactures some of the finest marking and measuring tools available on the market today. Many of these are still made with similar manufacturing processes as in the early days, only where necessary has man power been replaced by machines. The tools are still hand finished and materials selected from the finest sustainable sources. In fact, the same threads are used on their gauges as were used over 100 years ago! Proof that quality is as good today as it was then.

The Trial 1 range of tools were brought back into production to reinvent one of the original corporate logos (Trial 1) and are based on designs produced over 70 years ago. These are high quality, specially manufactured tools for those who appreciate only the finest products.

Joseph Marples is still being run by the Marples' family and is in it's 6th generation to be in succession there, Mr. Joseph A. (Tony) Marples. With so much history in place, these are tools that have a wealth of experience in their production.

Robert Sorby is the world's premier manufacturer of specialist woodworking tools. In 1624, Robert Sorsbie (a variation on today's pronunciation), was appointed the very first Mastler Cutler by the Company of Cutlers. This company was formed as a way of regulating the standards in the cutlery industry. This group is still in operation today and still serves to protect the rights of the Sheffield name used in manufacturing. The Sorby family led a long and varied history in the cutlery and tooling industry. From their early beginnings in tooling, the company Robert Sorby has developed a specific expertise in edge tool manufacture, which has been passed through the generations to produce today's classic collection of Robert Sorby tools. It is believed that Robert Sorby is one of the oldest hand tool manufacturers in the city and indeed certainly one of the oldest still producing today.
