Made in Sheffield

The Made in Sheffield logo that is featured on our site and on various items of our literature is a symbol of our commitment to a city that has been renowned world over for it’s quality and excellence in the tool industry for centuries.

Our lengthy Sheffield history means we owe a lot to this city and all that it stands for in terms of its manufacturing excellence. Although much of the manufacturing in Sheffield has depleted over the years, there are still many companies who still produce a high number of quality products here.
To those of us who produce goods in Sheffield, the Made in Sheffield logo is a sign of quality and something we are incredibly proud of. The city gained such importance in it’s industrial might due to the geography, which had rivers for water power, the granite for grit stones and iron ore used in steel production.
The invention of steel and later stainless steel was and still is such an important thing to recognise. What industry doesn’t require steel of some kind? This led to a huge number of steel by products and more specifically items with a cutting edge to be produced here.
The 1841 census of England and Wales showed that 3 out of 4 saw makers lived in Sheffield. Even into the early 1980s, most people in Sheffield were employed by a steel related trade. The Ellis family can trace ancestors back in edge tool grinding jobs and saw making for 5 generations.
In an era where we have all seen a mass increase in foreign importations, the Made in Sheffield logo provides us with a collective symbol that we can use to allow consumers to recognise the origins of their products. This insight enables you to ensure that you are buying a product you can trust and also have the knowledge you are supporting UK industries.

We have been recognised as a Heritage Brand due to our longevity and links to traditional skills that are a strong reminder to modern Sheffield manufacturers why they are based here. https://www.madeinsheffield.org/heritage/
